Brings a tear to my eye, this place was so full of action at one point.

As far as video (movies) it's gasping for air - but so are the other video-centric sites.
VideoHelp is way down (but still no spam).
VirtualDub.org is coughing up blood.
Doom9 has a steady client base - but that site gives the air of requiring you to know the answer before posting anyway.
AD has one advantage over them inasmuch as it also caters to the Console fans - which leaves me out as my last game was Parsec on a TI-99 simulator
The main indicator for me was when the Nero salt mines closed up;a sure indicator that backing up DVD's was being tossed out the window - sadly,Windows isn't.

Digital Digest used to be a pretty big competitor of aD back in the day too and it's gone the same way. They were a bit more techy/uptight than over here.
I think AfterDawn probably still has a pretty decent active user base, there is just very little getting said users involved. It doesn't help that the forums are a mess, even if they're not too active - most of them need consolidating in to more general forums, some just need straight up deleting, the archived forums need to be moved and the layout as you browse down is horrible.
I dread to think how much time/potentially money they wasted translating the site into other languages only recently too. I imagine the ad revenue is still pretty decent though, and that's likely all that they are concerned with.

You mean they're thinking of moving the forums over to something like phpbb or vbulletin?

Makes sense to me - as nice as it is having bespoke software, it's probably an expensive headache to maintain and upgrade. Moving to something like that will probably make your life easier too (not that I know much about the mod tools on aD's current software).
Would help with the spam. Hopefully they'll overhaul the layout etc too while they're at it.

It's dead. Every forum I used to frequent is now full of spam. Bit of a shame.

It's been pretty much the same configuration for the past 5 years, with some meagre, yet useful improvements.

Fair enough; I know that I said it would be an improvement but it's essentially flogging a dead horse.

The English forums have declined in "new user" usage significantly over the past few years, though the forum still attracts quite a bit of traffic for existing threads, but people seem to come, get their answers and don't need to get involved in any discussion. The Finnish forums (which is where aD is based) and other forums established by AfterDawn are very active and continue to grow. The non-forum sites of AfterDawn are pretty large too.
The company hires a few dozen people around the world, and everyone has their individual tasks/responsibilities. The work is all primarily done in non-forum areas (though I assume dev staff work on forums backend and later updates to the site from time to time) because that's the only way to keep everyone employed. The English forums have slowed down to a crawl in terms of new posts / threads, but AfterDawn's overall web properties are far from dead, in fact in many areas it's completely the opposite.
I'd love to see more user interaction here again personally, but to be honest I had given up on participating in forums quite a long time ago, as the atmosphere of the forum turned very hostile. For me the golden days of the forum were as far back as 2002, when people REALLY needed a forum like AfterDawn. When the answers to questions weren't to use one-click apps, but instead could be these lengthy step-by-step instructions on how to get out of a mess. There was no Facebook or vast content farms of extremely low-quality assistance that was optimized to exploit Google's algorithms, so you might actually find answers on AfterDawn, Digital-Digest, Doom9, VideoHelp, CDFreaks (now MyCE) and so on. But hey, I retained most of the friends I made from then so it's not so bad ;-)
