R4 help needed

I know, I know, the same old question by DS slowbie. I purchased the R4 kit, followed the instructions as laid out by this forum and all I get when I turn the DS on is "Loading..." Not sure what to try next. I purchased the R4 kit while in China, but I don't know if I need to download a Chinese version of the kernal or English version. I have tried both but get the same result. Does anyone have enough patience to help out a DS illiterate?

First, you start by letting us know which of the 25+ variations of the R4 card you purchased, the size of the microSD card, what kernel you downloaded and from where. Y'know, something useful.

Then I'm sure someone can help.

The R4 box says:
R4
Revolution for DS
(NDSL/NDS)
MicroSD
USB 2.0

The MicroSD card is a:
Kingston
MicroSD
HC
4GB

I downloaded the kernal from:
http://www.r4ds.cn/download/r4_v1.18_kernel.html
I tried Download1 and Download2(worldwide)

I downloaded the kernal from:
http://www.linfoxdomain.com/nintendo/ds/
?R4SDHC_v1.21_English.zip

I do the download directly to the MicroSD card, extract to the MicroSD card, move the files to the root directory, load some .NDS files and put it in the DS. Every time it says "Loading..." forever.

If you have posted accurate information, you have an original R4 that only supports 2GB microSD.

The last supported kernel is v1.18 and can be D/Led from r4ds.com

First you will need to get a 2GB or smaller microSD.
