I was infected with a very slick virus/Spyware. It was found and killed by my scanner but not before it mutated some how. The original file was quarenteened but it loaded other files that were not caught. It infected Firefox and I assume it was some kind of spyware. God only knows what it was doing. I will need to start changing passwords. I am guessing it was grabbing at least passwords if not a keylogger. The give way FoxFire loads at startup but you can only see it in the task manager. It will restart if you kill the process.

an update even though my virus/malware claimed I was protected, I down downloaded and installed Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.43 in a safemode session. It found and destroyer 26 infected then it found more in a complete scan after a reboot. That got the ones I was worried about but not all of them. I complained to PCshield and they said for 350 USDs they would fix the problem after showing me more traces of active viruses. The torrent browsers are great places to pick up high bandwidth servers.

I also discovered many of my free utilities were infected.

Same thing happened to me.
I was on the sight and read a warning not to click on any pdf files, I then went to close the page and my browser slowed way down, then got a popup window ( a fake I'm pretty sure) window saying I'm infected. Even when I started in safe mode the pop up would appear and my taskbar was gone. After powering down and up a few times it went away and I was able to run Malware bytes and it deleted 6 files.
The computer seems clean now. I'm going to check task manager when I get home. Oh Crap.

I plan to start new in a few weeks. Format or start with a clean disk. I may not even put a torrent client on it. That is why I am not doing it now. I have not had any problems with viruses in many years so I am been lax. All last year I have been in a diminishing return. I have been at it for many years. I started before anyone was after torrents so you had carte blanche bandwidth but far less to pick from. I saw the writing on the wall and took the time to get what I could while the getting was good. The getting is not so good anymore. It is a great deal of work finding stuff I don't have and those torrents rarely deliver more than a few kbs if I am lucky. Some only deliver factions of a kb. Half of them go belly up after a month of work. It is too much work, not enough satisfaction. I hope to quite while I am ahead.
