Heyy,When i use BitTorrent most of the time it has a download speed of 20-50 kbps but occasionally it goes up to 150kbps. It said that the port 6881 was closed so i opened it on my router which is a Dlink DIR-615 but BitTorrent still said it was closed. does anyone know why i occasionally get high speeds but most of the time their low?? and does anyone know why it still says the ports are closed??

thanx to anyoneone that replys

Did you also set an exception in your software firewall?

If you did, it is a good idea not to use a port within the 6881-6999 range as these are often blocked by ISPs as these were the original ports used by bittorrent. Better to use a port in the 49152-65534 range.

You may occasionally get high speed because someone with a high upload rate may connect with you even though you are firewalled. Being firewalled means others can not initiate connections to you, but does not mean you can not connect.

Also, capping your upload in BitTorrent will help download speed and help maintain connections. If upload is set too high, or to unlimited, it will interfere with needed communications (re-send request, acknowledgment signals etc). On the other hand the more upload you send out the more download you get back from other peers.

The general rule is to cap upload at 80% of your internet connection's upload limit. A speed test should be taken to determine your connection's upload rate. This guide is for uTorrent, but BitTorrent and uTorrent are identical, so it will help. It has links to a speed test and a calculator:

Could be your ISP too, are the good speeds at off peak times, you can see if it's on here but there are more: http://www.azureuswiki.com/index.php/Bad_ISPs Here's a fast torrent you can try, let it run 10-15 minutes (3.1.1 is usually good): http://distribution.openoffice.org/p2p/ Is UPnP off in Bittorrent?
