I've been using torrents for years and have used bit torrent for a long time. I've recently moved house and changed ISP and router. I can only download on bit torrent at 5kb/s. If I download a program or file from a webpage it goes at way over 100k/s plus. I've tried using utorrent and azaurus and they won't even connect and didn't even download a single kb of data. I've tried opening ports to allow it to download quicker but it just won't work. I've disabled all firewalls and nothing seems to work.

My router is a Thomson Gateway. Can anyone help me get bit torrent working? I've looked at the tutorials on this site and followed their advice. I just can't get this working!!!!

Do you happen to notice if they are all trying to access the torrents over the same port?

Have you tried ewsgroups? You are able to encrypt them, and that will almost always get past any ISP based network protocol "slowdowns"

Also what are ewsgroups?

Thanks

Who is your ISP?

What is the model number on the Thompson Gateway?

Did you portforward through the Thomson?

Are you showing a clear network connection in uTorrent or Vuze?

If not, then these might help:
http://www.zensupport.co.uk/KnowledgeBase/article.aspx?id=10883
http://forum.portforward.com/YaBB.cgi?num=1224326446/3

PlusNet is known to limit bandwidth for bittorrent, but I do not think that is your present issue. It sounds like you do not have a clear network connection.

I've tried that and assigned 8800 as a port and still only getting a download speed of 3 k/ps. How do i know if I'm getting a clear connection on Azaurus?

Is 8800 the port you are using in Azureus (Vuze)?

You can see what port you are using in Azureus and test the port at Help>NAT / Firewall Test.

8800 is not the worst port to choose, but choosing a port in the 49152-65534 range will eliminate any possible issues.

I have this same router, my port forward settings on the TG585 v7 are as follows ~

Port forwarding is easy, you just pick the device you want (in the TG585 v7) and add the Game/Application sharing as per my screenshot, just add your required port(s) as required..

I have Linksys Routers hanging off the this router and i've forwarded the same ports in the main Linksys Router too.
I've found that if i don't forward ports in the Linksys as well then stuff doesn't work properly hence why i have to configure the Thomson and the main Linksys (the same is true of configuring Xbox Live). If you only have the Thomson, just configure that.

I only use UTorrent so can't comment on what settings Azureus might need...

I tested the port 49152 and it said this:

Testing port 49152 ...
NAT Error - Connect attempt to *IP removed by creaky* (your computer) timed out after 20 seconds. This means your port is probably closed.

Any ideas?

I've changed it to 49666 which Azarus said was ok. However, I'm still getting download speeds with Bit lord of 4ks. and with Azurus at less than 1Kb/s

In addition to jeffw224's replies, try these ~

http://www.portforward.com/english/route...85i/Azureus.htm

And the port checker's here ~ http://www.portforward.com/help/portcheck.htm (don't know if this is the one you used already)..

Use Transport Encryption-RC4 at Tool's>option's>connection>transport encryption. You can choose to tick the ‘Allow non-encrypted outgoing connections if encrypted connection attempt fails’ box.
This will ensure compatibility with clients that are not using encryption.

However, it makes it easier for your ISP to detect Bit Torrent traffic. Its recommended that you tick this box first. If you are still not getting proper speeds untick it.

5. Tick the ‘Allow non-encrypted incoming connections’ box and disable UPnP at tool's>option's>plugin's>UPnP. Edit: taking a speedtest and setting upload to 80% can help download.

You should edit your post to remove your IP.

You need to set a rule for port 49152 in the Thomson allowing both TCP and UDP (looks like you have to make two rules: one for each).
Check Creaky's post as that looks to be the correct procedure for Azureus also-it is the same as uTorrent for this.

I do not know if you are testing with your firewall disabled or not. You can try with it disabled, but eventually you want to set an exception for Azureus (or its port) in your software firewall. Usually not very difficult at all and you can keep your firewall protection active while using Azureus.

The port checker program says that all of the ports I've entered (tried about 30-40) are 'not open' or unreachable? Any idea why they would all be shut? I've turned off windows and AVG firewalls and still says the same.

I haven't had to mess with my Windows Firewall or AVG to set mine up. The Thomson's aren't crap routers but they seem to take a few attempts for things to 'stick'. Once you've set the required ports, power cycle the router and see if the settings are 'stuck'. I found that the port checker program was still moaning and Xbox Live was actually working fine. The same was true back when i setup the ports for Utorrent. And as i say it was more tricky for me as i had to configure the Linksys router as well as the Thomson.

Tried all this advice. Still no better on either Bitlord or Vuze (azarus). Can't get it downloading over 2ks. Sometimes a window pops up on the side saying certain ports are not accessible. I'm at a total loss! Does anyone have any suggestions? I've changed the port many times and it has no effect. Is there anything else that could be stopping the torrents from downloading? I uploaded at 41kb/s earlier. Is there something on the router or vista that I need to change or alter?

I haven't used either of those programs. Have you still been trying to get UTorrent to work ? as that's what i use, there'll be a nice green tick at the bottom middle of the Utorrent window if all is well..

I tried utorrent yesterday and it was no better.

The router says that my Ip assigment is DHCP and not 'static'

Also Vuze says that my ip address is different to what my router says that it is?

It's your router :) ..only you can know what settings you want...

I personally don't have the Thomson doing any of that, it's just providing the internet connection and DHCP is turned off. I prefer to use my Linksys routers for everything else, in my case i use the wierd and wonderful 'Static DHCP' so all my devices always get the same exact IP addresses each time..

Just tried Utorrent there's a yellow triangle in the middle and it says there may be a problem with your network connection

the port should not show open until you have cleared it through the Thomson (and firewall if it is active) by setting an exception.

Both the Thomson and your firewall will block your bittorrent communications unless an exception is made.

Changing the port number in vuze or uTorrent will not change anything unless the port number is cleared.
You need to set the exception in the Thomson for the port you are using in your bittorrent program.
You need to set an exception in your firewall either for the port number or the bittorrent program.

You should also look at setting a static IP

I have done the following things...

Gone into the Thomson router thing. Created or modified the application i.e. utorrent.

I have selected a port for utorrent
I then assigned that program to my laptop
I changed the port in utorrent to the one I selected in the thomson gateway

I have disabled the firewalls

Where have I gone wrong?

It is hard to tell as I do not have that router.

As I see it in the guide, if you are using port 49666 in uTorrent then there should be two rules in the thomson: one for 49666 TCP and one for 49666 UDP.

the port range should be 49666-49666 and the translate to should also be 49666-49666 for each of those rules.

I see you already got the assign to computer part.

I assume the Thomson is the only device between your laptop and the internet.
What is your security software? (anti-virus; firewall etc)
