I was here in this forum quite a while ago and had recieved some barely remembered information about a change that had been made to uTorrent and that many people believed utorrent was more secure before the change. When I was here the time before I downloaded the one that was said to be the best - but I lost the file. I want to get it back so does anybody here know of a good older model of uTorrent that prople see as being more secure than the newer ones?

Thanks,

I imagine this is the version you're referring to: http://www.filehippo.com/download_utorrent/1258/ and it was probably someting to do with Bram Cohen buying out utorrent and joining the MPAA. But I think that was over two year's ago and I honestly think some action would have showed by now. It was kind of dumb of him to say there was no conflict of interest but nobody but a fool (that he's not) buy's a very successful product to destroy it. Just my opinion.

Those older models of uTorrent are not "more secure", they are critically less secure.

Those older models are the subject of "highly critical" security alerts from Secunia and should be avoided.
This one is specifically for that model:
http://secunia.com/advisories/24130/
These are for later models, but probably affect that earlier model also:
http://secunia.com/advisories/28533/
http://secunia.com/advisories/31441/

Mistcat is correct that this whole idea of the older models being more secure was a result of the BitTorrent take over of uTorrent back in December, 2006. BitTorrent's business associations with media companies were the cause of concern.

Mistcat is also correct that in those two and a half years there has been no evidence of this having any effect. In that 2-1/2 years uTorrent has become the dominant bittorrent client (28 million regular users) and there has been no evidence that uTorrent users have been targeted.

Best to get the latest version of uTorrent as that is the most "secure".

It's flagged as insecure by at least 5 private trackers.. suspicious connectiona and spraying packets around outside the sawrm.. 3 security sites (members only) have it listed as potential spyware after seeing connection requests to ip's in the warner and sony domains on app startup which have nothing to do with the actual trackers or swarms being connected to. Up to you.. I won't have it anywhere near my systems.

Were you speaking of the latest "secure" version recommended in jeffw224 post or commenting on the offending versions in that same post?

So would you care to suggest an alternative to utorrent, i.e what do you use for torrenting?

At the risk of butting in here, varnull suggested Vuze with the Bluetack blocklist to me rather than utorrent and PG (same list) and it run's excellent here. Not saying it's anywhere near as light as utorrent but that combo actually run's better on my machine. Plus it's very configurable and compatible with Vista where PG wasn't for me.
