I recently got a warning from my ISP letting me know that they had been notified I was sharing content through bittorrent that someone wasn't happy about. I stopped sharing it right away and then downloaded Peerblock. Since then I haven't done any torrenting until yesterday. I decided to test a bit on a few torrents and Mediasentinel pinged me almost immediately even though I purposely chose torrents I never thought they would be monitoring (one was a japanese movie from the 70s with only a few other peers connected).

I am new to all this stuff and I never thought I would have made enough of a ripple for anti-p2p companies to be interested in me but there you go. Anyway, I was just wondering if I should be concerned or not? Is Mediasentinel monitoring me or the torrents? Anyone have any tips on keeping a low profile?

Back when I used peerguardian to monitor that sort of thing, they pinged me constantly. I never even got a letter.

Unlikely that they are monitoring you. My IP filter shows hits (and blocks) even when I have no torrents.

I am not sure what is going on with that, but it is unlikely that they were monitoring that torrent.

Try with no torrents. I think you will still see hits.

Also, try with DHT/PEX disabled and you should not see any hits.

thanks for the quick replies. On a related note, I was curious why peerblock can also block educational institutions from your computer. Any special reasons for this?

I believe it's so you can use torrenting programs on campus but I am not sure.

From what I have read/noticed is that peerguardian doesn't help.

Unversities get grants to spy on you.

The pings are form 'spiders'. They are apps that creep around the DHT net or web. They explore every location your computer sends data. Then ever location on each of those computers. There are hundreds if not thousands of these spiders.

One of the things they all want to get is your IP address which they have, if you have a p2p client up and running, if so how much have you downloaded and how much have you uploaded. That info is available for the asking since most trackers want that info before they let you in. They put that in a database with a date time stamp and keep track of the torrent community. That is how they come up with how much money is lost. If you have been very bad they will remember where you live and get hacker to sniff out your computer if they can. If they are not successful they will continue to try to do something bad.
