Ok I use BitComet (yea yea I know all about what they do but the GUI is great and I still get good speeds for using public trackers)

I was sitting here downloading at about 300kb/s for a while so I decided to increase my upload to possibly open up more download ability. I went from 80 up to 100 up to see how much of a difference there would be. Suddenly my speed dropped by over 100kb/s so I waited to see if it would recover. Half hour later its down to about 120kb/s. So I drop uploads to 80 again and sure enough my downloads instantly go back up to 300kb/s. I was a little intrigued at this so I lowered my upload to 70, and bang, my downloads hit the floor again. I spent a few hours testing my settings and apparently anything below 78 or above 83 makes my downloads nosedive while 80 seems to be the sweet spot.

I am using a cable connection 15down-1up mb/s so I can't see it being a problem there.

Any1 able to shed some light on this? I know that the amount of upload can increase or decrease your connection, but for such a small tweak to kill the connection just seems bizarre to me.

If upload is set too high, or to unlimited, in BitComet (or any bittorrent client), it will interfere with outgoing communications from BitComet (Acknowledgment signals, resend requests etc.) and download speeds will suffer.

One weakness of BitComet is that you can not control the number of upload slots so your upload can be concentrated to deliver to other peers who can upload well back to you.

Combine those two and you can get quite a fluctuation from upload settings that are either too low or too high.

It is generally advised to set upload at 80% of your internet connection's upload capacity. A speed test usually needs to be taken, but it looks like you have figured out the right spot through BitComet.

Your internet speed is advertised in bits (b) and BitComet shows speeds in bytes (B).
8b = 1B so the 1Mb upload would equal 125kB. However the 1Mb is the max (advertised as "speeds up to") and you may well get a little less. So the 80kBps is probably not far off from 80%.

bah thats so obvious as well... I simply made the dumb mistake of thinking bits and bits when it was bits and bytes.

Thanks for showing me how a silly mistake can make something that seemed so interesting be something that was plainly obvious heh.

Appreciate the reply.
