Newbie to Torrents, so forgive me if this is a stupid, or at the very least, naive question. When I download via Torrent, I notice that Peers are able to upload the File both during and after the download.
My question is, since the peers are able to access this file for uploading, are they able to access any other files on my PC to upload as well? Is there something I need to do to limit the access to just these files, or by default is Peer Access limited to files I'm downloading via U Torrent?
Naive but smart question. No peer has access to your computer behind the firewall. Your software sends packets because someone requested them. They can only ask they can not take it from you. You are expected to give back at least what you took. Some sites keep track for themselves others check your client stats. This all takes place of the other side of your fire wall. 2 things... 1 you want to force encrypt your data, 2 use something like peerblock to keep the cyber police from accessing that data place on the other side of the fire wall. Most public trackers require to see how much you have uploaded and how much you have down loaded since you installed the software. It uses those stats to decide how to treat you. If a torrent only has 1 or 2 seeds it will only pass data from the seeds to peers with a high ratio and are most complete. They are safe bets to keep that torrent alive. The cyber cops want that info as well.
Lastly, read the 5 most resent threads some have info you ought to read.
Thanks Mez, that really helps clear things up. U Torrent recommends a ratio of at least 1.0. It seems like you can get close to that number just during the download process itself. The Peer Block is something I need to look into to. Not too familiar with that, but it sounds like it would be good to have.
Unless you are in a country where P2P is expressly illegal, torrents provide marginal safety and privacy. If you encrypt your in and out flows they need to hack your computer (illegal) to be sure what you have been doing for most cases. Even with a blocker they will get in to log your ups and downs on to the black list from time to time. The wise will cease and desist before an anti-P2P becomes law and remove all 'goodies' from anywhere that can be accessed from the internet. You will be so low on the priority list, they will run out of gas long before the cyber cops get down to you. That is what I call marginal safety.
first thing i do when i have finished download a torrent is virus/malware scan of it and then a copy and paste to another location and then delete any text files or system files.there for i keep the movie or song/s i downloaded and get rid of any trackers.once i copied the file somewhere else i deleted the original.I dont specificaly know what the text/tracker files do but i know i don't need them.

The torrents will be moved to a certain place. Use search to find that location. You can also search for the file name for all files modified when your job finished.
Safer is to have two C:s. One for normal one for dirty work. That only works if you down load occasionally.
