i was messing around with some of the settings on utorrent after i downlaoded it
i chnaged the option in the connection type and now have noticed a significant decrease in the speeds of my downloads.
My question is, is there a way to set it back to the default settings before a changed it at all

Don't know if there's a reset default button but why not set your connection type to its proper setting? That should fix your speed issue. If that's connection type at option's>speed guide>connection type, take this speed test and note the upload rate it give's you: http://www.speedtest.net/ It's in Mb; time's it by 1024 to get kb and select the number closest to that at connection type. Speed varies so let thing's run awhile. Edit: forget the 80% if you saw it, Utorrent does it for you.

You can change back to default settings by deleting settings.dat and settings.dat.old from %AppData%\uTorrent with the client closed.

The Connection Type dropdown menu in uTorrent shows some usual upload speeds in kilobits (kbs). It is the upload speed result on the speed test that is important.

You can use their speed test or the one Mistycat suggested. For the one Mistycat suggested, you can change the output numbers to kilobits by clicking on Settings in the upper left corner and change Speed Measurement to kilobits.
