I didn't see any music download categories anywhere, so I think this is the best place for my question.
I used to use LimeWire Basic to download my music, but now that is obviously out-of-service with their court problems.
So I was going to buy LimeWire Pro 2011 and use that, but then I wondered if that will also be affected by the lawsuit? I really liked the LimeWire program so I'd like to keep using, but I just want to make sure the Pro version is going to work with this lawsuit before I go and buy it.
Are there any other programs out there that work well?
I did try BearShare. I thought it was a totally free program but it turns out I only got a week-ish trial AND almost all the music I downloaded doesn't play anymore because it apparently downloaded without a license (which I was unaware of ... probably something I did as I am not super-duper music savvy).
No iTunes. I do not have an iPod and I'd rather not have my music locked in iTunes forever and ever.
p2p section is probably where you wanna look for peer to peer downloading (such as limewire and similar programs).I use torrents myself.use vuze(program) and torrents and you should have some luck.not sure if limewire pro will work due to the lawsuit.havnt used limewire since about 06.apparently limewire got virus ridden badly years ago.heard mixed reviews about frostwire havnt used it personally.

an old verion of Limewire of Frostwire. Again I don't use anything at the moment but have used limewire and torrents. I preferred torrents and I would say that is still the best method for getting music. The quality, variety and speed of torrents is hard to beat. There are also things like rapid share which are paid for but are faster than torrents and probably not a huge a selection as some monster torrents site like Pirate Bay and Demoniod. I still suspect rapid share might have a better selection than even Frostwire.

Frostwire is as simple to use as Limewire.
Okay, here's my "lack of tech knowledge" questioin:
What exactly is a torrent? And how is it different than Limewire?
I do understand that LimeWire is a P2P type of program where the music is shared between users. (correct?)
a torrent is p2p where a file/s is uploaded and downloaded by multiply people.basically a torrent is just a file or group of files.basically with torrents once you start 1 downloading you will see a number of seeds(uploaders) and peers/leechers(downloaders).

With torrents you can find just about anything, because it's P2P (Peer to Peer) so you're grabbing it from other users. The more seeds, the faster the download.
Get a torrent program like uTorrent, and then there are sites out there that have music that you can get. Just Google for "music torrent trackers" and you should be good!
Another nice thing about torrents over Limewire or Frostwire, is you don't get virus' quite often. At least, I've never gotten a virus when downloading music!
torrents are a bit harder to use. This is a good thing because total morons don't use torrents. You don't get DRMed music with torrents. The quality is better with torrents because the providers are not morons. While malware is common with simple P2P Limewire ect. You play the tune and you become infected with a bot-net. It is very rare to get malware with a torrent. You are more likely to get a false positive than a virus. This is because the torrent users are not completely anonymous so they take pride in what is put up. With the simple P2P a hackers open up a directory full of malware labels as music videos etc. and who is to know. There is no quality control and there is no home base.
We have at least one member that distributes malware that way. They actually go out of their way to make it look suspicious. That way all but the most stupid are scared off. With total morons you are free to do what ever you want for as long as you want.
Other fine points is a source may be around for months with with simple P2P your source may only be available for an hour or so.
