Im on chorus broadband in ireland and have downloaded a lot, a hell of a lot, of torrents over the last couple of years. Ive always used utorrent and never used peerguardian (im on vista-peerguardian doesnt work with vista...right?).

Am i in for a world of trouble if they start prosecuting here in ireland? Would changing my ip make any difference?

Any input appreciated

I do not think you have much to worry about if you have stopped.

Who is to say what they will do. If you are not doing it anymore you will be at least on a low priority hit list. There will probably always be persons that are still doing it. They will focus on them. Moving to a new ISP might cover your tracks some and is not a bad idea. Anything you can do to make it harder to go after you the safer you are. You could also move your ill gotten gains to a stand alone computer or at least off to a disk not connected to your computer when it is connected to the internet.

As you fade into the past, you will become less and less of a target. Remember, many players ping the internet when you play a tune. I have friends that are afraid to download but still swap music. They use apps that ping the internet so they are not nearly as safe as they think.

I would get peer guardian today and install and keep it running. I am pinged constanly and have not done anything for months. It is getting less but very slowly.

if you were to get prosecuted unless you were downloading and mass producing movies, cds ect i doubt you'd really be in big trouble.if they start prosecuting people for downloading stuff which they do occasionally its usually people that make big money from it.

Id no idea about apps pinging the net in that way.

Thanks for the advice guys, think i might install windows xp so i can use peerguardian, or i was thinking of getting a usenet account, is that a safer way of doing it? From my understanding the anti-piracy guys cant see the swarm as they can with p2p, is this correct?

Usenet is not p2p. They have yet got a good bear on that YET.

xboxdvl2, you need to read more. They may want to prosecut with a rein of terror like they did in the US for a few years. The attacks appeared random. Jamie Thomas was small potatoes, something like 100 tunes and got a million in fines. Still they caught her while she was downloading.

Ill be honest, as fas as isp's go my options are fairly limited, none other offers the speed my current one does.

Would getting a new ip address help cover my tracks?

Maybe. I do not know how long the IPS needs to keep records after you quit in your country. Probably, moving all illgotten gains off the computer connected to the inet and formatting or putting in a new C: drive may actually be a better bet. They will need to aquire evidance before going after you. It is unlikely they have anything right now. If there is none, why bother with you when they have a million smoking guns to go after?

One last thing, they have stopped prosecuting in the US because it was not cost effective. It was until persons went to court. Often, some proof was obtaine illegally. Now they just want to stop a person cheaply.

By cheaply do you mean the 3 strikes rules implemented in France and soon to be on eircom here?

The 3 strike rule allows for a more massive approch. They hope it reduces all the cases where a hacker is using the IP address. They will tell the user if you are not downloading secure your network. That is what they hope. Prosecution is a failed experiment.
