I have an xvid movie file with 640x352 resolution. Using a 640x352 bmp or jpeg file, I would like to add a 5 second screen intro/outro screen to the start and to the end of the video. This seems so simple but after 6 hours, I can't find any way to do it.

I thought about using the jpeg file to make a 5 second movie in Windows Movie Maker, then joining the files together... but Windows Movie Maker won't output a 640x352 resolution movie file.

I don't mind if the intro/outro screen overlaps the first and last 5 seconds of the movie, as long as the audio is muted. However, I'm not even able to edit the audio because it is compressed.

Please advise, this should be so simple yet it is driving me mad.

Many thanks.

Why make a clip from your picture and then join with the video?!! Just drag both in the storyline in WMM, the picture and the AVI. Shouldn't have a problem importing the AVI in Windows Movie maker. If you do, try this free piece:

Thanks. The problem is that I want to maintain the 640x352 (16:8.8) resolution, and Windows Movie Maker keeps resizing it. Is there any way to keep this resolution, even though it may not be exactly 16:9?

Do you want that particular resolution, or you want 16:9?

The program that I suggested above has more output options than WMM:

Or you can make the little clip in WMM, then resize it to your resolution before you append it to the video.

Well, I think I found a solution for you...going back to the awesome Avidemux (i tried, and it worked...not sure what was the problem with VirtualDub?)
Anyway, I opened the picture that I wanted for the intro, and then appended it 49 times(it gave me 50 frames, 2 seconds of video play; you can add as much as you want):

You can do it two ways:
Open the intro picture and append it as much as needed to give you enough frames for as many minutes you want, then append the video and at the end the closing pic. However, this way the entire video will be re-encoded, so you will lose quality.

Or, the best way I think, just create the intro/closing clip in Avidemux, save it, then open it again and append the video. This way will only take a few minutes.

If you want to have like a 5 second intro, that would be a lot of appending;to save you some time, I would just add 25 frames, save the ~1sec intro video, then open that, append it to its self 4 times and then append the main movie.

It might not be how the pros do it, but it works.Your specific resolution, 640x352, will be preserved.
