However, I'd suggest to encode using x.264 instead of RMVB. It is more versatile and portable, many more applications for it. So, make an AVI/MKV using x.264 for compression. You can use Handbrake for that, or any of the software in this thread:

Thanks for the useful reply. I downloaded the Easy RealMedia Producer and tried to convert an .avi (42MB) but it only creates 15KB rmvb file. Looking at the log file which says "Neither uncompressed audio or video was available in DirectShow Reader"
I too recommend h.264 video compression in mkvcontainer because it is widely accepted, there are more and more standalone players that will play them, great video quality for far smaller size than divx, xvid counterparts
