I've got some custom DVD's that I thought displayed too skinny on my Samsung widescreen...I guess some of them were in Letterbox, I'm not sure...Anyway some of them I re-sized in Windows so that they would display larger. They ended up looking like the way Fox broadcasts shows like "24" with about an inch and more of black at the top and the bottom.

I'm currently playing back these discs on an older standard def Magnavox with a max of 480p, but what I'm wondering is, once I get a new DVD with the whole up conversion thing, will they display the same or be stretched to full screen?

If you displaying them on a small screen, it will be OK.

IMHO, upscaling looks WORSE on larger TV screens.

Remember that upscaling interpolates (i.e. estimates) the original 4:3 content to 16:9

No I've got a 46 inch Samsung wide screen. So I assume that what you mean is, if I'm showing something that's already in 16:9, it shouldn't be affected.

Also...my plan is to still show custom-made movies through standard phono jacks (I assume that's still 480p in a newer DVD player), because they look ok in that now with my Magnavox and only use the HDMI cables to run the pre-recorded DVD's through.
