HDMI Picture Quality Question

I got a Vizio HDMI cable which I have been using to connect my laptop to my Vizio 32" HDTV and after some playing I realized I had to change the system sound playback on the laptop to HDMI in order to get sound but after I started watching movies from the laptop through the TV I have noticed that the picture on the TV is darker than the laptop. Is there a recommended settings configuration that anyone is aware of for the TV's picture setup?
