Please advise what I need to do to my PSP version 2.81 before I can add .iso games to the memory stick.
I?ve downloaded a game to my computer, unzipped it to an .iso file and loaded it on to the internal 1GB memory stick. But, life?s never that easy is it?and it doesn?t work! SO, is this where ?homebrew? comes in? Is that some clever software that should be loaded first? Or, are there several other hoops to jump through before the .iso games can be played?

Seriously, before giving any advice, could you please read first? There is no real mod chip for the PSP, only the Undiluded Platinum, which was never of any relevance (I know noone online or offline who actually installed that one in a PSP).
Also what is an ISO reader? The times of ISO loaders like Fast loader 0.7 or DevHook are long over.
I realy would like to see the face of that shop clerk when you go to your nearest Walmart or even electronics market and ask them to install "the program that i need to play downloaded games".
To the toppicstarter:
Just get one of those downgraders here:

Due to you being on 2.81 you might need to upgrade to 3.03 first.
Also you could use ChickHEN.
After you downgraded successfully install custom firmware.
Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.

You'd need an unpatched version of GTA LCS for any 3.03 downgrade, no? It would probably just be easiest to use a Pandora Battery (you can either buy one or lend one off someone else that already has custom firmware).
Anyway, to the OP, so you understand what we're on about; the best way to play games you've downloaded on a PSP is to get custom firmware, a custom firmware is a modified version of an official Sony firmware that has bits added in and bits taken out to let you run unsigned code and a whole lot more. Long story short, a pandora Battery is the easiest way to get you onto custom firmware, and then you can play your games straight off the memory stick.
PSP, all the way from 1.00 to 5.50 GEN D2 - DS Lite w/ M3DS Real (M3 Sakura v1.34)
PS3 3.01 - iPod Touch 2G 16GB Jailbroken - Xbox 360 60GB - PC, Q6600, 3GB DDR2, GTX260 (216) 896MB

You are right about that one. Either GTA LCS unpatched for 3.03 or Lumines for 3.11 or 3.50. So ChickHEN seems to be the cheapest method. It doesn't require a pandora battery (not that it isn't useful always to have one in case of bricking).
