PSP 1001 V3.80 - have emulator question

We've read and read for this information with no success:- we have a DS with an R4 card that we've been using- but now we have this PSP. So we're familiar with the basic process.
Under system settings it says 'System Software Version 3.80- the nickname is P393 - this was my brothers and I want to be able to put games on this like we have on our DS with the R4 card, but it seems that there are so many variables!
Can anyone tell us which emulator/emulators to put on this and do we need to downgrade at all in order to play games? We've read a lot about the V1.50 or whatever, but nothing on the 3.80.

You need custom firmware, there is no "card" like the DS has.

Google CFW using chickhen, and there are loads of guides to adding custom firmware without having to buy anything (you do need a memory stick)

There are two types one for PSP 1000 (Phat) and one for 2000 (slim)

As your firmware is 3.80 you have a fully hackable slim (no need for the enabler)
