Trouble with PS1 (or PSX?) on PSP

I have PSP 1000 modded with 5.00 M33-4 software. I have GoW, Crisis Core and games from various times so I don't want to up/downgrade to a firmware that restricts me from playing these game (unless switching back is quick and easy). I put my Final Fantasy 7 (Eboot) into another folder and I copied it onto PSP/Game/FinalFantasy/Eboot. Now, I can see the game's icon, it looks like it would work but when I try to play it, it says that my system software is version 5.00 and I must update to 5.50. Where can I go to do that? If I do that, will that restrict me from doing certain things? Is it reversible? Is it recommended that I search for another torrent of the game rip that doesn't require me to upgrade or is there no such thing? Thanks in advance!
