Hello Afterdawn. First topic. I'm a pretty hardcore Nintendo fan, so this is a big step for me.
So I am looking into buying a PSP for its homebrew capabilities. I have had my eye on them for awhile but bought a DS-Lite... and now have a lot of interest in PSP, particularly for Dissidia, Skype, and PSX/SNES emulation.
I have done some research, and it seems like the PSP-3000 series is the best... unless I get stuck with a unit locked into >5.03 firmware. Plus even if I do I apparently need to reflash HEN every time I want to add a different program(?)
The PSP-2000 is good for hacking usually, but certain motherboards are utterly unhackable, and there is no way to tell for sure until you've attempted a flash...
So, um, should I buy a new PSP-3000 and return it if the firmware is too new? Or will all 3000's now in a store be unhackable by this point? If I bought one used, should it be a 3000 or a 2000? I am pretty sure I can check the firmware before I leave the store (usually Gamestop-type places will let you get your hands on it before you walk out) but I am not sure which model would be preferable.
I will probably hack it immediately (I consider myself fairly tech-savvy) so if I brick the PSP I can return it to the store, who will ship it to Sony as a reminder not to keep playing this cat-and-mouse game with determined customers.
