Okay until recently my 'phat' PSP was working completely fine. I had a party and I assume it was rough handled because during party night, I was playing Legend of Legaia and it worked fine. Decided to press start and suddenly none of the buttons were responding.
I assumed it froze so I turned it off and started it back up. No buttons would respond except for volume up/down and the dim button.
If I load up the m33 menu, holding the right shoulder buttons all the buttons work fine then I exit and the same problem.
The only solution anyone has been able to give me was that maybe I disassemble it and clean the psp up around the button but I fail to see why that work make a difference if they respond otherwise.
Also strangely enough, I think it was the way I was holding it but I started it up and actually got it to load up an .iso and all buttons were working until I again pressed the start button, then the buttons won't respond.
Anyone care to help?

the buttons along the bottom (start strip)are notorious for causing issues, the foil strip is a simple repair - get a replacement strip (about $4)

So it is the buttons along the bottom -- start strip that are causing everything else to screw up?
Well, I live on Guam and I have no idea where I'd be able to purchase a replacement strip here without having to order it online.
I doubt Gamestop would hold such treasures and I'm not sure if the local "PSP Repair shops" would sell me it w/o trying to rip me off.

You can test it by opening the PSP and removing the foil from the connector (under the screen) this will tell you if it is the foil causing all the issues.

I'll try taking it apart today but just to be sure, when I take off the foil, without having a replacement foil, how can I make sure that's the problem or not?
Obviously I'm kind of an idiot so apologies in advance, I just obviously don't know what I'd be looking for or where I'm supposed to go after I remove the foil.
I assume that I turn it on or something but wouldn't the problem still persist whether I removed it or not?

Yes sorry - got your problem confused with another - that one, one of the buttons was constantly clicking. The foil is a common issue!

Read the above - it is more than likely a faulty button foil. You will have to open the psp to locate them, they are very cheap to replace, just not that easy.

Mmm.
So if it's the common faulty foil why do all the buttons ALWAYS work when I boot up M33?
Also, where would I get foil to replace the foil in the PSP?
I don't know, it's just confusing because the buttons work when I boot up the M33 but it doesn'tw ork when I switch right over to the actual PSP menu.
Sorrrrry.

M33 seems to ignore multiple buttons being pressed at the same time, the PSP sees this and does strange things.
The buttons are on a very thin circuit board (www.dealextreme.com have them) I got mine from eBay.

Ohhhhhhhhh. That makes loads of sense.
Wowee wow wow, thanks for explaining that. Sorry for asking so many questions and htanks for putting up with me.
One last one if you wouldn't mind, is this going to be a often recurring problem or is there something I can do to prevent it in the future some way?
Thanks so much for putting up with all my noob posts, I really couldn't find help any where lse.

I have only replaced it once on my phat (3+ Years)
The general feeling is that it is corrosion, the foil is very thin and some were not sealed very well. Sometimes you can see a little white area covering two tracks, most of the time they look fine.
The cost to change the home strip is £3 - £7 depending where you get it from (the phat and slim do have different types)
Dealextreme are OK just the wait - up to 4 weeks, hence I have used eBay and made sure I got a UK seller.
