PSP 1001 turns off reading UMD

I have a PSP 1001 that turns off while trying to read a umd.
The laser lights, the laser moves back and forth, the laser moves up and down and the motor spins the disc. When I insert a umd the loading icon appears in the lower right hand corner of the screen. It will pulse for about 30 seconds then freeze and the PSP turns off. If I start with the umd in the screen comes with no icons except the loading icon and does the same thing. I am willing and able to replace the umd drive but want to make sure that the drive is the problem befor I invest in a new one.

Sounds like the UMD is the problem. If it works perfectly without using the UMD, then that must be it.

all of the other functions work fine. I am going to order a new UMD drive and will post my results.
