PSP 2000 UMD Strange Problem

I'm trying to fix a PSP (2000 Slim) for a friend. He brought it to me with the UMD not reading discs, or only occasionally. I tried cleaning it and it seemed to work. However, when I tried it again the next morning it wasn't working. After a few other things I ordered a new drive and replaced it. I took it back to him working. A week later the same thing. So I tried cleaning this new one. I got it up and running again. I tried both drives again, in fact, and it seemed to work. Put it back together then the next morning, same thing. The drive wasn't working.I ordered another replacement drive sending the first replacement back as faulty. Now with this new drive. It worked but again, the morning after it wasn't working.

Anyone have a clue? I figure it can't be the drive problem unless we've been super unlucky. Not sure what to try next.

Any ideas?
