PSP Analog stick problem

Sometimes when I move/hold the analog stick in the up direction it causes the character/cursor to move down. Sometimes it continues to move downwards even after I have released the stick. It only causes this problem in the up direction, any other direction behaves normally. Sometimes after leaving the stick alone for a while(like days) I noticed that it corrects itself temporarily.

Any ideas for a solution to this?

check the tension on the screws that hold the face plate on, make sure they all have the same tension. loose screws in the faceplate can cause these problems.
