PSP hardware question

I have a PSP Slim (PSP2001), it was dropped and no longer turns on. I have tried several different ways to turn it on:
Batt only: Green light turns on for about 15 seconds, then turns off. Nothing on display, no sound.
Batt + AC: Orange charging light comes on, does not change. Nothing on display, no sound.
AC only: Green light for about 15 seconds, then turns off. Nothing on display, no sound.

I disassembled the entire thing, have not found any cracks in the boards or loose connections. I did however find that the ribbon cable from the UMD drive is stained and looks as if it is cracked.
Is it possible that the PSP will not turn on at all when the UMD drive is not working responding correctly? I would imagine the PSP would work normally, just not able to read from the UMD drive.

If anybody could please help me out with this that would be great. Unfortunately I do not have any working testing parts. The PSP has not been hacked and I would prefer not to (I dont want my kids playing violent games).

The PSP will function without the UMD drive connected.

Unfortunately without parts to swap in and out it is very difficult to fault find. With modern non lead solder a cracked joins on a larger component is a favourite (DS Lites suffer this as well).
