If you use the up and down volume buttons - do they operate and register on the PSP
Does the sound work if you use headphones

The next contender would be the home button strip, if you feel confident then remove the 7 screws and take off the front plate, the home strip has a single connector under the screen, turn on the PSP and turn the volume to full and start a game. pull out the wire from the connector, with gentle pull it will come out (you will need to lift the screen to put it back in). Leave the game running and see if the volume goes down.
If it doesn't then get a new home strip and replace yours.
If it does then it is now down to the motherboard - you will have to live with it

Format the memory stick. Then all data is gone, so if there is a virus (which I doubt) and your antivirus isn't simply taking one of your homebrew apps as a virus (which I think) you should get rid of it.
Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.

I doubt that. If it was the home strip the button would simply be dead, the volume wouldn't go down all by itself. I had a dead volume up button, I could still lower the volume manually.

i've seen the home cap on the home strip get stuck before, it didn't just die.
i'm quite sure the same could happen to the volume caps.

So let me get this straight, instead of getting a spare part for 2 US$ you sit there with a dead machine for a month hoping that someone would give you an advice on how to save these 2 US$? Are you kidding me? Your button strip is dead, get a new one. You said you are able to clean it out, switching out the button strip is not harder.
