I just bought a PSP Fat, quite used, off of my best friend for $30. I then gave it to a friend to mod, and it took him 2 weeks to get it back to me, and he didnt even mod it.
Anyways, I was at my computer today just testing out some UMD's while doing homework, not playing yet. When I finally finished I got in bed and put in the game "Brooktown High" or w.e...i got past the character creation, then it got stuck at "autosave", so i turned it off and ever since then none of the UMD's get read... just the loading icon at the bottom right, and i also noticed that if i start the psp with a UMD in, it won't show any of the menu buttons until i take it out...anyone able to help me please???

Its your UMD and since it's not under warranty you either have to try and fix it, could be a dirty lense or replace the UMD.

Thank you very much...it started working again on it's own, i guess something was loose or there musta been dirt in there interfering, not quite sure. In any case, I got lucky, which is why i'd like to know how much it usually costs to have your UMD Drive replaced if you send it in without warranty, because i have a feeling im gonna get unlucky with it pretty soon
it takes less then 5 minutes to mod a psp and if you know someone with a phat modded psp you can have them make a pandora battery and magic memory stick for free or you can buy a pandora battery for around $7 but if you get it modded you should backup your umd's to .iso and load them with your memory sticks in case your umd drive does break and you don't know anyone to fix it
