That's about the same for the HP Netbook, it had a SAS Hitachi SSD.
I was also looking at the Intel DC S3500's but they are much more money then the Samsung's and the Sammy's are solid so I would go that route right now too.

The main reason I went for Intels was that they were about a long time before Samsung and used to be the only solid (no pun intended) brand. Nowadays Samsung have been in the game long enough to prove themselves, and post reliability scores that are just as impressive.

I don't mind it. As long as you ditch the startscreen and reinstate the start menu with a third party application (it's not coming back in 8.1 by the way, so no point waiting), it's fairly reasonable. A few things are made a bit annoying, but overall I prefer the look and feel once you're actually in the desktop - no more worrying about Aero as you get transparency without it (which means it also works in remote desktop) - faster boot times etc.
There are some applications that don't support it (HDDLed Indicator and uTorrent, to name a couple) but on the whole not too many. The main reason for me getting it was being able to pay £75 for three legitimate windows licenses. Now they're £200 each, I shan't be buying any more, and I have installed one additional copy since. I'll leave how to your imagination ;)

Might make the jump with an OS refresh and see how it goeth!
Im still shocked my system is still standing to be honest!
wonder if haswell will be worth the jump up, or just another SSD this time?

Depends from. Haswell is a power efficiency and IGP upgrade, but not a performance upgrade. Little by the little the generational leaps add up, but really, Haswell is to Ivy Bridge what Ivy Bridge was to Sandy Bridge in terms of performance, so on a per-clock basis:
CORE 100 -> 240 @ 2.40Ghz as per Q6600
PENRYN 115 -> 325 @ 2.83Ghz as per Q9550
LYNNFIELD 140 -> 373 @ 2.66Ghz as per i7 920
SANDY BRIDGE 155 -> 525 @ 3.40Ghz as per i7 2600K
IVY BRIDGE 168 -> 588 @ 3.50Ghz as per i7 3770K
HASWELL 180 -> 630 @ 3.50Ghz as per i7 4770K (forming 2520 as 4-core)
and, roughly:
PHENOM II 102 -> 325 @ 3.20Ghz as per X4 955 (forming 1300 as 4-core)
Bulldozer 76 -> 274 @ 3.60Ghz as per FX-8150 (forming 2190 as 8-core)
Piledriver 79 -> 316 @ 4.00Ghz as per FX-8350 (forming 2530 as 8-core)

God i miss upgrading my system. regret selling what i had at the LAN events :(
what are you currently running?
i presume the GTX7 series are more a refresh than a generation leap? will the same be of the 8 series?

Indeed. I'm interested in hearing about the forthcoming Nvidia GPU's.

Link in the blog is still accurate. Been a while since the gaming PC has seen an upgrade, or a clean for that matter.
The GTX7 series are indeed a refresh of GTX6. In true nvidia style, similar numbers does not dictate a similar product - the GTX780 is a cut down version of the GK110 behemoth featuring in the Titan, and as such comes with a good 90% of the performance of the Titan, but a fairly substantial £550 price tag.
The GTX770 on the other hand is a GK104, as featured in the GTX670/680, so consider this a rebrand of the GTX680, with a 4% higher clock speed, but only 2GB of memory, c.f. the 3GB the GTX680 has.

Windows 8,
I can't say that I like it and the Metro is about worthless, plus I don't think square/rectangular tiles are pleasant either. Plus you get into some of the apps and it is hard to close them until you learn the work arounds, and it isn't the same for all apps. Also a lot of programs don't support the whole metro concept so you are limited on what you can install to the new Start screen. Another annoyance is that the tiles are not configurable, you're stuck with what ever size/shape they give you. I find myself wasting time going between or spending hours of tweaking just to get back close to 7. There are way to many thing hidden as well so if you are the typical MAC user you may like it because it seems simple however it lacks in power and efficiency.
I will be using it but only because I have to support others that have it otherwise I wouldn't wast my time with it.
That's my two cents worth...

The Start screen is the Metro UI, you have to use it at least to boot into. So you have used it at least temporarily.

Just the first time - ClassicShell, in addition to adding a start menu, bypasses the startscreen at boot.

That's good to know I'll play with that some too. I didn't think of playing with Classic shell when I worked on my friends Netbook as I was trying to ramp up on tweaks that would work and allow him to still take advantage of Metro..
Thanks Sam,
Stevo

Anyone know of a handy chart that shows memory throughput for different timings and speeds? Re-evaluating my stance on PC3 12800 since the timings for higher speeds appear to have come down and feeling too lazy to make one myself :P
edit: Figured it out. I'll probably be going with DDR3-1866 9-9-9-24.

I recall thinking that VGA @ 1080/1200P wasn't that bad. And I guess it isn't. But... on a 37" HDTV, the softness that's present is much more apparent LOL! But, it'll suffice for sending a signal from laptop. I guess it'll have to since that's all the laptop has. But I definitely look at VGA with one brow raised now LOL!
Running a Multiavchd job, and WOW is it making use of my X6 core!

Sam, I had some trouble understanding exactly what these numbers are conveying. Can you explain for my own curiosity please? I have a hunch but I want to fully understand what you mean.
Quote: CORE 100 -> 240 @ 2.40Ghz as per Q6600
PENRYN 115 -> 325 @ 2.83Ghz as per Q9550
LYNNFIELD 140 -> 373 @ 2.66Ghz as per i7 920
SANDY BRIDGE 155 -> 525 @ 3.40Ghz as per i7 2600K
IVY BRIDGE 168 -> 588 @ 3.50Ghz as per i7 3770K
HASWELL 180 -> 630 @ 3.50Ghz as per i7 4770K (forming 2520 as 4-core)
and, roughly:
PHENOM II 102 -> 325 @ 3.20Ghz as per X4 955 (forming 1300 as 4-core)
Bulldozer 76 -> 274 @ 3.60Ghz as per FX-8150 (forming 2190 as 8-core)
Piledriver 79 -> 316 @ 4.00Ghz as per FX-8350 (forming 2530 as 8-core)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My close friend will be purchasing a new laptop with Windows 8 in a few weeks.
It's based on the AMD A10 4600M 2.3GHz APU(nice little CPUs) with a 7660G integrated that can hybrid Crossfire with the discrete 7670M with 1GB of dedicated VRAM. His current laptop, an A8 4500M at 1.9GHz with only the integrated 7640G, already runs many modern games quite decently so this will be nice.
They are technically dual cores with some extra guts in each core BTW. They detect like quad cores and perform quite well but they only have two real cores. They have only two modules with four integer-cores and two floating-point cores so they're not true quad-cores.
He had a laptop shortly before his current one with an AMD E-450 at 1.65 GHz with integrated Radeon 6320. Its performance was laughable and was barely adequate for some things. I believe it was a Bobcat-based "Zacate" dual core. These newer APUs are based on Trinity and closer to something like Piledriver or Jaguar which is going in the consoles. Much more reasonable performance. Actually adequate for a variety of games.
He's going to be trying ClassicShell so I'll have quite a bit of time on Windows 8 playing games and taking care of some projects we've been working on. We are both curious as to how it runs. My significant other's laptop uses Windows 8 but she won't let me play with it lol. I'll have to try again haha.

They're rough relativistic figures for performance per core per clock, and thus performance total per core, and performance total overall.
The benchmark is Intel's Core platform, scoring 100 per Ghz per core, so an example of this CPU, the Q6600, uses 4 cores at 2.40Gghz -> 240 per core, 960 overall.
Hopefully that makes sense.

Reasonable certainly, although we are now at 75% higher performance per clock per core on the latest Intel CPUs. Not much to show for 5 years progress though I'll admit, especially considering Intel still had a 12% lead even back then.

Hey Sam, thanks for the great cpu chart, and thanks Jeff, for asking Sam to clarify - I thought I understood but I see I didn't, however now thanks to you I think I do (correct me please anybody if I again missed the point.)
So the numbers on the left are power per 100 ghz, basically the raw power of the processor,
Originally posted by Sam: CORE 100 -> 240 @ 2.40Ghz as per Q6600
PENRYN 115 -> 325 @ 2.83Ghz as per Q9550 =
LYNNFIELD 140 -> 373 @ 2.66Ghz as per i7 920
SANDY BRIDGE 155 -> 525 @ 3.40Ghz as per i7 2600K
IVY BRIDGE 168 -> 588 @ 3.50Ghz as per i7 3770K
HASWELL 180 -> 630 @ 3.50Ghz as per i7 4770K (forming 2520 as 4-core)
and, roughly:
PHENOM II 102 -> 325 @ 3.20Ghz as per X4 955 (forming 1300 as 4-core)
Bulldozer 76 -> 274 @ 3.60Ghz as per FX-8150 (forming 2190 as 8-core)
Piledriver 79 -> 316 @ 4.00Ghz as per FX-8350 (forming 2530 as 8-core)
and so then multiplying that number by the operating frequency (I'm adding this to Sam's chart) we get
without factoring in over-clocking:
Originally posted by Sam: CORE 100 -> 240 @ 2.40Ghz as per Q6600 = = 240 total

LYNNFIELD 140 -> 373 @ 2.66Ghz as per i7 920 = 372 total

HASWELL 180 -> 630 @ 3.50Ghz as per i7 4770K (forming 2520 as 4-core) = 630 total
and, roughly:
PHENOM II 102 -> 325 @ 3.20Ghz as per X4 955 (forming 1300 as 4-core) = 326 total
Bulldozer 76 -> 274 @ 3.60Ghz as per FX-8150 (forming 2190 as 8-core) = 274 (4) or 548 (8) total
Piledriver 79 -> 316 @ 4.00Ghz as per FX-8350 (forming 2530 as 8-core) = 316 (4) or 632 (8) total
For gaming, Sam would probably add that the 8 core numbers don't count. And furthermore I suppose we could add to this a third column based on ease of over-clocking, which I won't try to do here, but for example, SANDY overclocks better than IVY, am I right?
And thanks Jeff for the info on Assassins Creed - I will check it out starting with something past the first one (if I like it I'll probably go back and play the first one.)
So Shaff - you're out of university now too, right? So what kind of work are you doing? (Say hi to your brother - has he broken any more of your computer hardware lately? hahaha)
Stevo, I took that photo for you of the two 27" 2560x1440 cad monitors my brother is using, like you are thinking of setting up when you buy your second monitor.
Sam - finally - these are the real monitors for my brother's CAD system.
As I mentioned a month or so ago over on the gaming thread, we set him up temporarily out on my work station in the sun room. That monitor sticking up behind is my official test bench monitor, a Dell 20" 1600x1200. (Just to illustrate the post, a month ago I had included a stock google photo of two monitors, both of which as Sam correctly pointed out, were only 20's, lol.)
I'm glad Kevin that you don't sit right on top of your 37", lol, but take a look at the resolution of these 27" monitors, bordering on twice the resolution of 1080p.
So, zosolv, 1080p on your 27" may work perfectly well for you - it works fine for Jeff on his 24" - but Stevo and Joe have these - just a lot more pixels for more detailed information - but at about twice the price.
Hey, speaking of Kevin watching movies - are you guys into Game of Thrones? My two brothers are and I finally started watching them - I'm two-thirds of the way through all 28 but we already received two cease and desist letters from cox cable - I didn't think anybody cared about tv shows. It's the most pirated tv show of all time! I don't know exactly how we're going to get SO309 unless one of you guys wants to upload it in 720p 1.5 gigs to my ftp site. Hahaha. (-- to the powers that be, of course this whole thing is a joke as we all know I don't "sample" --)
Lastly, don't think I didn't notice the words "significant other" in your post, Jeff - and that reminds me of what you said some time back about dating now starting to take up a significant amount of your time. Congratulations! Do you care to elaborate? (Have you dropped your plans to go off to Afghanistan?)
Rich
