Help - noob needs info on iphone IMEI/ESN

I'm trying to buy an iphone 3g, unlock, and put a prepaid T-mobile SIM into it.

I'm about to buy the phone, and I understand I need the ESN to verify with T-mobile that the phone is not stolen, under contract, etc. I asked the seller for the ESN, and the number I got is in the format 12345ABCXY5H (that is, 5 numerals, 7 letters, 1 numeral, 1 letter).

OK, first problem is that T-mobile doesn't know what an ESN is, they want the IMEI. Don't all GSM phones have IMEI, not ESN? Why do all the websites say "check ESN".

Second, the number I was given doesn't look to be in the format I expect for IMEI. Was I given the right number?
