battery dead after charging iPhone through iPod charger

I need some help with my iPhone. I have a 1st generation iPhone that I had charged a few days ago using my old iPod charger. I noticed the phone getting very warm, so I stopped charging it.
Now after charging it with the iPhone charger, the batter dies way too quickly. I charged it through the night, and now 4 hours later with less than 10 min talk time, I am at 60%, and it will probably be empty in another 4 hours or so. (the battery used to last me 2 days or more on standby)

Is there a way to fix this issue? Any help would be much appreciated.
