Is there a way to convert a side by side 3d video file into 2d video?

I currently don't have a 3D TV, but have an MKV concert with side by side picture, I'm trying to cut one side of the picture and stretch the remaining one to the original widescreen format, or combine both together to make a it a normal 2d picture.

Is this possible at all?

I've never seen one.
If you check the aspect ratio using Mediainfo, is it something like 3.555 instead of 1.777?
If so, you can probably open it in AviDemux and crop the right half off and get back to 1.777.

This is how the whole video file looks like: http://hd.engadget.com/2010/05/21/popbox-licenses-realds-side-by-side-frame-compatible-3d-format/

With Mediainfo this is what comes up with:

ID : 1
Format : MPEG Video
Format_Commercial_IfAny : HDV 720p
Format version : Version 2
Format profile : Main@High
Format settings, BVOP : No
Format settings, Matrix : Default
Codec ID : V_MPEG2
Codec ID/Info : MPEG 1 or 2 Video
Duration : 49mn 54s
Bit rate mode : Constant
Bit rate : 16.7 Mbps
Width : 1 280 pixels
Height : 720 pixels
Display aspect ratio : 16:9
Frame rate : 59.940 fps
Color space : YUV
Chroma subsampling : 4:2:0
Bit depth : 8 bits
Scan type : Progressive
Compression mode : Lossy
Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.302
Stream size : 5.70 GiB (94%)

You are saying that with AviDemix I should be able to crop on half? but how do I expand the other half to 16:9 ?

Thanks for the help!

Just guessing 1280 x 720, crop 640 x 720 then resize (after unlocking the aspect ratio) to 1280 x 720.

I suggest though that you post on the Videohelp site - it's really out of my league.

strangely sounds like a form of interlacing.. seems somebody has combined both fields into one.. maybe.. whatever they were trying to do it seems like they failed big time.. very weird format indeed.. have you tried playing it deinterlaced and droping either a or b fields? (odds or evens) It might not be as "side by side" as you think but instead be at "double frame" rate making your display show them side by side instead of one after the other..
