converting avi to dvd

I have a dvd recorder that records to dvd; I recorded a tv program that I want to convert to mp4. I recorded it to dvd but wehn I put it in my computers optical drive, it only sees it as an audio cd. I put it back in the dvd recorder and pushed play, and it plays beautifully, audio and video. I am not sure where to go from here. I would like to rip it to my hard drive but I am not sure how to do that. I assume it is AVI. I could put it back in the dvd recorder and hook the output to my computer and go the long route from there but I am sure someone knows of a better way. Thanx in advance for all your help AGAIN.

Was the disk finalized in the recorder (if it's DVD-R or DVD-RW it has to be, else it's not readable on a PC).

Yes, it was. I guess I really need to know how to download the avi disc to my computer. I have Roxio vhs to dvd but I don't want to have to go that route if I don't have to. Thanx for the response.

I'm not clear where this AVI on disk came from.
I'm assuming that your original recording was made on a standalone DVD recorder.
These create DVD movie disks - not AVI.

It sounds like maybe your PC doesn't have the codecs to play the video portion on the DVD only the audio. Try using VLC media player and see if it plays with that or install the K-lite codec pack from Afterdawn in their software downloads up at the top of the page.

Irecorded a Tv program. It finished and finalized. I find it hard to believe that my computer does not have the proper ccodecs with the 6 or 7 Dvd programs. I have but I will try. Thanx

I recorded this program from my cable box that is hooked up to the dvdrecorder and then to the tv. Since it is hooked up to the avi hook ups, not hdmi or the red/blue/green hook ups, I assumed it recorded in avi. Since I am trying to convert it to mp4 to put on my pad, I have already tried several programs to convert to mp4 to no avail. I cannot even seem to burn it to my hdd. If it was a dvd movie disk, would it be mp2? mov? I am kinda lost here. Thanx for all your help. I did download the K-lite and tried it but it would only work for about 20 minutes and then stop working.

AVI? - are the connections red/white/yellow? perhaps marked as Audio/Video?

I'm sure that the recording is standard DVD movie format.
And Windows Explorer can't read the contents even though your certain that it's been finalized in the recorder - you can put it back in the recorder and find the 'finalize' selection from the menu?
I take it that your PC can play regular DVD movie disks ok - it's just this one?

It is indeed just this one. I burn and edit and do all kinds of DVDing; which is why I am so confused about this one. Most of the programs that I have for such usually tell you what they are : ISO, MP4, MP2, etc and yet this one kept coming up as an audio CD. I even put it back in the dvd recorder and it played just fine. This program is so good that I want to put it on my ipad and I have 2 programs to do that but neither one can read it. I consider this a learning experience and I will find a way to do it if I have to make a VHS of it and then convert. That just seems like such a long way to go about it; at least, that I know I can do. Thanx again

Insert the disk in the PC.
Download and run Isobuster.
If it's a standard DVD it should show a VIDEO_TS folder with VOB files inside.

An IFO file is an information file.
There has to be VOB files as shown here and they have to be large files.
Can you post an image of what's on the disk.

yes video ts when you use a dvd recorder, find the vob files and you can even use free converts to join them and convert them to mp4,

I ran ISO Buster and it says VFR, and when I click on it, it gives me the VT files but I cannot extract them because ISO Buster is not free and I did not pay. At least I know the files are there, so I can try other avenues to get them. I tried using dvd decrypter, and a few others to no avail. Thanx Oh, I would send you the screenshot of what I got but I don't know how to do that.

I ran the free version of ISO Buster and it would not extract the VOB files. There were 3 large Vob files, as you had told me earlier. It looked alot like the picture that you showed. I will try again. Is there a way to copy and paste the page from ISO buster so you can see what I see? Thanx again for hanging with me.

You press the 'Print Screen' key (which copies it to the clipboard) then you paste it in Windows Paint or IrfanView or similar;crop the interesting bit then save it as a .jpg file.

Well, Success. What a learning curve. Ended up putting the disc back in the recorder and pressing the menu button and it asked me if I wanted to finalize the disc? I thought I had already been asked; in fact, I am sure of it. Maybe I hit the wrong button on the remote. Anyway, I did and now I am able to convert to mp4. You guys are a dream and don't let anybody tell you differently. Thanx a million.
