Just wondering if anyone can let me know how I can convert my mkv files to m2ts and still keep 5.1 sound when streaming to ps3.

Some of my files have DTS audio, I know the ps3 cannot stream DTS so is there a way to convert the audio?

I have tried tsmuxer, but when i stream the m2ts file there is no 5.1 sound just stero sound.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know anything about Ps3, but I have converted DTS to AC3 5.1
IF you can demux the DTS track with TsMuxer, look at post #4 in the link.
Convert the DTS to AC3, then use that audio instead of the DTS in TsMuxer.

Ok so that did work, the AC3 file was alot smaller than the DTS file but when I streamed it to PS3 my reciever
showed Dolby sound.
Does the fact that the file size changes matter?

On some of the files that I converted to m2ts I get sound but no picture, any ideas?
Thanks for the help so far.

I don't - I seldom use the format and I don't do PS3.
Try posting on one of the console forums at Afterdawn or at Videohelp.com

You can use MKV2VOB to do this. Very very easy to use.

uncheck "Always Transcode DTS" and you will have your Surround Sound.

Thanks I did that and it worked fine.
It took a few hours to convert and the file was bigger than original. Is that normal?

Am I getting the same quality file as the original?
Is VOB better than M2TS or are the both the same?

Thanks for all the help guys, it's much appreciated.

Sometimes it does take a while to convert depending on the original conversion method used.

In the configuration tab make sure you apply these settings

Video Transcoding - Automatic
File Splitting - None
Transcoding Codec - Slow (if you choose high bitrate it will take a bit longer and make the file bigger)
Output File Extension - what ever you want but I use m2ts

Yup

I prefer m2ts,but as I said you can choose whatever you like.

Any other question please do not hesitate to ask. Sorry for the late response as I work long hours.

Is there any reason you prefer m2ts? does it play better on the PS3?

mkvtovob converts to a VOB file, does changing the extenison make any difference?

I tried the High Bitrate option and the file came out more than double the original size and it took over 20 hours to convert, if storage was not an issue is it worth doing?

Not really unless you want to watch the movie on a media player like WDlive

You cant tell with the naked eye but I cant tell. I would suggest to do an experiment to see if its worth the extra time and higher bitrate. I did and couldn't tell the difference so it wasn't the extra time for me.

Post back and let us know your findings and if all went well...again, any questions don't hesitate to ask.

Ok tried the High Bit Rate option on a few files and then compared them to the other ones, I could not tell the difference.
So considering the High Bitrate option more than doubles the file size it is not really worth it.

All the files that I have converted using mkvtovob have streamed fine to my PS3 using PS3 Media Server.
It is now a lot easier to ffw and rwd as well as skip to any part in the movie.

Thanks again geestar I now have a lot of converting to do!
