Ok so here is my situation I have some home videos that are on a DVD and currently am out of funds to go buy more DVD-R discs and would like to use the CD-R Discs I have laying around instead. So my question is how would I go about getting these videos to fit onto the CD-R disc. without losing too much quality some is ok but I don't want it looking terrible. I know how to get the videos off of my DVD to say an AVI file etc. My problem is getting the DVD basically copied to fit on my CD-R discs. I've tried several programs but I just can't seem to find what I need programs I have used are

Any Video Converter
Format Factory
Virtual Dub
CloneDVD2
DVDshrink

still I am at a loss of what to do any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also if at all possible I would like to be able to play these off a DVD player I know I'm asking alot but this is one problem I have yet to figure out on my own.

If they have to be played back on a standalone DVD player then it has to be VCD - better if the player can handle AVI files.

For custom size AVI:
If the DVD consists of a single title, use AutoGK to convert it to AVI and select a custom size (700MB).
It will require two passes which takes longer.
This assumes that the DVD Title has a two hour running time.
Burn the files to CD using ImgBurn.

Ok so what program would you suggest to use to rip to VCD?

I don't know of any one-click solutions (perhaps Nero still does it?).

Rip DVD to folder.
Convert VOB files in the folder to one large mpeg2 file using Vob2Mpg
Convert the mpeg2 file to mpeg1 (with mpa audio) using XMedia Recode
Convert mpeg1 file to VCD bin/cue using VCDGear.
Burn the cue/bin image file with ImgBurn

Remember, you still only get 70 minutes of video with the VCD format.

Note that VCDGear has a 'span image' option on the lower right - I haven't used it;assume it creates multiple images.
Good luck.
