How Best Download YouTube and Edit

I have a video file downloaded from Youtube by Atube Catcher. It saved it as a .webm file and I had it do a convert and got an mp4 file of it, too.

There's a short segment I want out of this file - about 1 minute only.

I am having trouble getting it. Can't yet get it. I have tried Magix and Avidemux and Virtual Dub and different things - Windows Movie Maker and so on.... with varying degrees of success.

Sometimes the progs wouldn't look at either file. A couple of progs got them and worked but one used 85% cpu cycles and I couldn't control the cursor and another was similar but I got around it by using the spacebar to stop the video and then I could use the cursor - and I got the job done but found the clip was then badly out of sync...

My board is an Asus A8NSLI and the chip an Athlon 64 3200 and I have a X800GT card - nothing really great but usually enough to enable smooth editing of video files, I've done a few in the past.

I admit I'm getting short of Hard Drive Space if that could be a factor.

Cut to the chase: Maybe I've gone the wrong way round the whole thing. Used the wrong prog to download, converted to the wrong type of file, using the wrong progs for editing.

So I've come here to ask: what should I use for the job?

Never even heard of the first file format you ended up with. I'd have thought downloading the YouTube video as a .flv file initially would make it easier to work with. Once you have an flv (may work with mp4, havent looked to see if it is supported), then give this a try

If not, a slightly more long winded way would be to use this to extract .avi and .mp3 streams from the .flv, mux them back together and then split the .avi (complete with audio) using VirtualDubMod or similar.

You can use this program to download the Videos in a MP4 format or extract just the MP3 from the Video.You don't have to install the program to use it either.
