I am having trouble converting 5Gig asf files to avi, or anything else.
The reason to convert is to have them in a format where my players can scroll up and down through the file. I have media player classic, windows media player, vlc, nero and various others I've tried which are not just players: like Super, for instance.
Or Connect Client, my webcam manager software.
Nothing seems to allow easy zooming along the timeline of these asf files. I feel the format doesn't lend itself to it.
If it does and there's some easily available software, preferably public domain, freeware or open source, then please let me know, we need go no further, that'll solve my problem.
Otherwise back to the problem: find some way to convert them to, for instance, avi.
I've been googling around the last three days using every spare minute and I can't find anything that will do it.
Super sets off and sometimes does it, other times hangs there stupified, doing nothing forever.
Some things couldn't handle files of that size. Something I had - forget what - seemed to be doing it, perhaps, but after three hours still didn't have it done.
I thought, because of that, of cutting the files into smaller chunks. I haven't even been able to do that.
Most recently, just now, I've been trying to get somewhere with Asftools V3.1 and AsfBin V1.8.
Asftools keeps taking a large file and happily processing it to produce a much smaller file. Much smaller. 10mins length instead of three hours, that kind of thing.
AsfBin won't cut them up because it says the 'Header is missing critical data'
I notice Asftools puts a good header on them. If I cut a section out of one with Asftools then AsfBin will accept it no problem.
But, as I say, Asftools won't process the complete file. I can give it the file, it'll take it and 'process' it and produce a file with a good header. But the file is only a fraction of the length of time it should be. Most of the stuff is gone.
These files are produced by a webcam, by the way, I perhaps should have said. And the operating software I have for it is not smart enough to produce many small files. If I want it to work unattended for a long time I can only opt for it to produce one huge file.
I am just not winning so far, at all. Thought I better ask for help in case I'm struggling to do something that's ridiculously easy if only you get the right tool which everyone except me knows about and is called...... ?
