Find out which video and audio codecs are used.
Something like MediaInfo should list them.

Settings I've been using in version 1.1.11
1.Run VLC.
2.Top Menu, Media > Convert/Save.
3.Browse to and 'Add..' the file.
4.Bottom/right of screen click 'Convert/Save'.
5.Browse to the destination location and give the output a name eg, 'newfile.mp4' and 'Save'.
6.In the 'Profile' box, select 'Video 264 + AAC' then click the little toolbox icon thingy to the right.
7.Encapulation SB MP4;Video H-264;Audio AAC - verify that the sample rate is 48000 and click 'Save'.
8.Bottom left of window, 'Streaming' pops on.The scrub bar starts moving;when complete,'Streaming' goes off.
