PVR recordings to MKV

Hey guys, have a slight problem.

So my pvr records to .ts formate (AVC video AC-3 audio)

Now I would like to edit out the commercials and store them in MKV formate to save on some space.

Now what I have currently been doing is using Power Director to edit out the commercials and then converting that to AVC, I then use another coverter to convert the AVC to MKV.

Now this takes loads of time to do even on my alienware.

So my question is, is there a program I could use to edit my videos and convert to mkv in one shot?
