I want to do some simple editing on some .flv files I have. Extract certain segments is all I want to do.

I downloaded that free flv editor lite and the first thing it did was run one of the files with the sound and video out of sync. Didn't inspire me with confidence.

Can anyone advise what's the best way to go about editing these files, best software to use (sticking to freeware preferably) and best technique?

In particular - would I be better off converting them to, for instance, avi, before even beginning?

Leave it as flv for editing.

Load the file in AviDemux.
On the lower left of the screen, change 'Format' to 'FLV'.
Use the slider and A/B buttons to delete bits you don't want and save the output.
Give the file a name including the extension (e.g. clip.flv)
