If you skip to teh 3rd to last paragraph it says:
"Once the Department of Defense approved $2.5 in funding for Condor, the Rome Lab bought as many systems as it could then afford?a total of 1700."

Wow who knew the cost of PS3s fell so quickly :P

You know what I love to hear is how these guy will now use graf's linux release. isnt he working on giving it access to the RSX chip, I mean that's a processor that is lying idol in all these PS3s, I bet the guys there would jump and be giddy as a schoolgirl if they were to realise that they can increase the power of their supercomputer by just hacking it!

Some ppl have posted "I would love to see a dongle in each of those PS3s" who needs dongles we have cfw now :P

haha, what they only just finished building this thing? I mean really how do we contact these guy to tell them of graf's linux! They's be like "omg we so want that, but then we'd have to build it up all over again"

Man we don't know much about this project. Government funded. Major boost to Daddy War Bucks ego. As far as we know they could be on 3.60 now.

But none the less full access to the video and ram would be no more power for the way those systems are being used. The multi core broadband processors is pretty much all they are using there.
