Either you need better thermal paste or you need to apply the thermal paste better...did you replace the thermal compound under the RSX cover?

...or you might need to lap the CELL and/or RSX.

My guess is that you just put it in the oven and then put the ps3 back together again :P

What you are supposed to do if removed the old thermal compound from the processor then but it in the oven. I guess leaving it on is ok but probably harder to remove it afterwards.

After you remove it from the oven you have to reapply thermal compound on both processors again. This helps with the heat transfer, if you did not add new compound then obviously the heat cannot be transferred to the heatsink efficiently and the processors will overheat and may fry out!

People go for Arctic silver or antec formula 5, they are bascially the same stuff, you can get cheaper stuff but they are not as good, there are a couple more expensive ones but i cant remember their names which are better.
But when it comes to thermal compound you dont really want to go for the cheaper option.

tbh I dont like the idea of the oven fix, you have no control over it really, if something goes wrong you wont find out until you remove it. I prefer the heatgun fix, at least if something looks to be going wrong you can stop immediately.

Arctic alumina is also passable...not as good as AS5 in terms of thermal transfer, but it lasts a lot longer because the molecules are a lot more stable.

Don't forget the thermal compound under the RSX cover...this is almost guaranteed to be destroyed after an oven fix.
