My PS3 stopped yesterday. It has a blinking red light.
Its a 40gb fat version. At least 4 yrs old. I have changed the the hard drive up to 500GB,
I haven't done a back up of the PS3. Im thinking of getting a new PS3.
Is it possible for me to retrieve the data when I get my new PS3. I have a lot of game progress, downloads, films music etc on it.
Can I remove the hard drive and connect it to the new PS3, via USB and could I retrieve the data there,
Or will I spend ?75 to get it fixed, Hopefully get another few months and back up the full system then.
My preferred option would be to get everyting off the hard drive if its possible.
I would try the hair dryer trick, the old box might work for a few days, atleast enough time to get the data off the harddrive. 75 Euros for a YLOD repair is pretty harsh, if it's not a full reball (total exchange of the solder).

Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.
Hi Eisherz,
Your advice worked. I have done the hair dryer trick.
My PS3 is now working again.
I will pick up the new 500GB slim on Thurs/Fri.
Will the PS3 still work by then or would I want to get it immediately to do a complete transfer from ps3 to ps3.

Hi Eisherz,
I finally got around to buying the new Super Slim 500gb model.
I transferred my full old ps3 to the new one. It took 2 attempts but it worked.
The hair dryer fix worked for me. The transfer just finished, and the old fat 40gb died on me.
Thanks for your help and info.
