I recently got a PS3 and seeing as I did not have a HDTV, I decided to plug it into my pc monitor, which has a maximum resolution of 1680 X 1050.I used a DVI to DVI cable, with a DVI-HDMI adapter by SANWA Supply. The DVI end of the adapter is attached to one end of the cable and the HDMI end is attached to the PS3. The other remaining end of the cable was attached to the monitor's DVI port. There weren't any images at all and the screen said "No Video Input", followed shortly by "Going into Sleep Mode". I then moved my PS3 and the monitor to the living room and plugged the component cables into my old TV and left the DVI-HDMI adapter with its cable as it was. I booted up my PS3 again and changed the display settings via my old TV to HDMI. My monitor then gave a momentary white flicker, like it finally responded to the connection being made. Then the screen remained dark and after about 30ish seconds, the image returned to my old TV. I tried the same thing again but this time, the monitor just went back into sleep mode without bothering to respond at all. Can someone please help? Is the cable I'm using the problem? Or is it the adapter? Should I just buy a straight DVI-HDMI cable instead of bothering with all the adapter bullcrap?
Also, my monitor's brand is Phillips and its model number is 220sw9fb. I checked the online manual (I lost the actual one a year ago) and it was listed as "DVI-D input and HDCP support".

It's probably the adapter. I have an HDMI to DVI cable that I use once in a while with one of my PS3's on my 1680x1050 monitor. Obviously you will only get 1280x720 but you will also have to find out if your monitor is 16x9 or 16x10 (most likely the latter)...not a big deal but the aspect ration will be off by a slight bit.
Actually, sometimes using a 1680x1050 monitor gets you a 1680x1050 image; that is what mine does; it just stretches the image to fit...and does not give you any choice about it. That screen is 16:10...so there will either be a stretched picture, a cutoff picture, some form of letterboxing, or a blank screen.
Plug the system into the monitor and don't connect any of the analogs. Turn on the monitor first, then press and hold the PS3 power button until it does a second beep. It should then display a low-res image on the screen and it will say it detected HDMI and do you want to use it. If you select yes, then it will go to 1080P and your monitor will turn off because it does not support 1080P. If you select no, you can then use the display menu to manually set the output to 720P.
