any ideas why my hdmi keeps crashing but my component keep working i have tried 3 different leads but all do the same i have a ps3 fat 60gig about 5 years old with cfw3.55

What do you mean by crashing? Screen goes black but there is still sound, lose both picture and sound, Picture is distorted?

Best to use a 1.3 or 1.4 hdmi cable as those support higher bandwidths.

Does it work fine on the 42"? DO you get both sound and picture on the 42"?

If the problems are only occurring on the 21" then it is most likely a problem with the TV not the console or cable.

but my 360 slim plays for hours on the 21" on 1080i no probs with the same cable and works fine on the 42" as i used my ps3 as a video upscaled

Have you got the setting configured correctly. Sometimes you have to reconfigure the display settings when you switch between TVs.
Best to connect the ps3 then reset it and then when you turn it back on will ask you to configure the settings again.

i Compleatly agree bigo93, i actually just hooked my HDMI up lastnight to my PS3 and had to reboot it in order for the PS3 to know it was plugged in via HDMI. Also if your monitor only allows for 1080I and not 1080P the PS3 ( even on the first set up) will automatically check 480p, 720p, 1080I, and 1080P.... so you may just have to go on the PS3 to Settings > display > HDMI and uncheck the 1080p as it sounds like your monitor can only handle up to 1080I.

That might also be the problem. The TV I have was given as support for 1080i, yet the PS3 scan also added 1080p to the list.
Though I have not had any problems so far. But maybe this may be the case here.
