IC chip or laser?

My ps3 stopped reading discs after the first game change following the newest ps3 update.functions normal otherwise. The xmb bubble is present but the disc does not spin or load to menu. Like so many others I assumed my laser was burnt, upon exploration and cleaning advice i found that the disc properly takes and seats the disc. The laser flashes and then sits idle. The IC chip could possibly be bad as the drive motor never spins. I do not know if replacing this laser will accomplish anything. The IC chip seems to be ball joint solders so replacement is not seen as reasonable. Do you think its the laser or the controller chip. If I replaced the controller board do i have to worry about "marriage? or firmware?

really sorry but this post is a book, please bear with me. laser faults is a hot topic as noone knows for sure what the causes are however i will share my experience with you. i have had 3 faulty ps3s in my hands with the intention of fixing them all - all had a laser problem of one sort or another as well as other faults. now when i got the first one it was fine except the laser - wouldnt read game/blu rays discs but fine with anything else. so i bought a small batch of faulty ps3 lasers hoping to get lucky. tried all 3 and the same result with each. so ended up selling it on as lasers were too expensive. second ps3 had different laser and different fault - it couldnt read dvd/cd etc. but could read bluray/games for about 5 mins then it would stop with read errors and freezes. unfortunatly i couldnt try the lasers as they were a different type however not long after that it developed a fatal YLOD so was useless so sold it for parts. the third one however was different - it could read everything once the tray problem was sorted but again blu rays would only work for about 10 mins. so on a hunch i added a side fan to the ps3 - this lengthened the time blurays would work for so it got me thinking, perhaps its not the lasers at all. so i swapped the laser for one of the old 'faulty' units and low and behold it works perfectly for hours on end - it even worked without the extra fan. so with hindsight i think that controller faults are far more common than people realise and when you think about the ps3 fan not working optimally you begin to see why failure happens - the controller board sits above the cpu/rsx chips (depending on model) but either way its not a good place. blurays will still burn out on there own as well so it could actually be either however i would bet its the controller board in your case. with hindsight it was definetly my controller board that was shot on my first ps3 so someone got a bargain there. as for changing the controller chip or board in your ps3 you need custom firmware to pair a new board or chip with your machine so if your ps3 is not cfw-able then your SOL im afraid. when cfw that allows pairing to be done with later firmwares comes along you wont have an issue but until then you may be stuffed. all depends on your firmware.
