Can you install firmware on the PS# (OFW) via a usb 2.0 external hard drive or does it ?HAVE to be a flash drive? Also is it true that when installing from a flash drive (or external if its possible) that NOTHING else can be on teh storage device expect for the firmware?

Yes it can be installed via USB 2.0 external HDD or any other external storage device as long as you have the right kind of PS3 such as the 60GB launch version or have an adapter like mine.
As for the second question, not true at all. You can have other stuff in the storage device as long as you have the proper folders in place in the external storage device like so.

Also make sure that the storage device your using is formatted to FAT32.

lol yeah "right kind of ps3"? What's that about?

But the method he's given will work on all PS3s even on latest slims. Again the external drive must be fat32 otherwise the ps3 wont recognise it. then play the update pup file in the folders PS3/UPDATE
The on ps3 goto settings, software update and select update from storage media and it'll look for it, then install as normal.

well that sthe thing Ill be installing teh updte from a newly installed internal hard drive which means there wont be an XMB to go to "software upate" on until teh firmware is installed.. so Im hoping the "press start + slecect to get the firmware to install from an USB device method (after upgrading harddrive) would work with an external...

Also Ive seen posts about people who have their external USB formatted to fat32 and the PS3 wont recognize it because the usb is outputting enough power (saying that with a y cable, or a usb power hub it works fine).. are there some usb powered externals that wont work because of that? because I just ordered one.. would I have been better off buying an external that plugged into the wall too avoid that possible problem?

It will still detect the update on the usb device when you do a fresh install of a new hdd.

As for external usb hdds, the ps3 usb ports will only power 2,5" drives, 3.5" drives will require an external power source.

I have a seagate goflex 250gb drive: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/249265?utm_source=google&utm_medium=products
this works fine and is power by the ps3 usb port

But if I had bought the 1tb version: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/233548
The ps3 would not be able to power it so you would have to plug it into a separate power socket.

This is because the 250gb one is a 2.5" drive and the 1tb is a 3.5" drive.
So if you ordered one that uses a 2.5" drive you will be fine, if you ordered a 3.5" one then you'll need another plug socket to power it.
