to replace the one thats in my ps3, i was looking at say a 1TB or a 2TB hdd,
what brand names work with the ps3???
right now i have a 40GB in my ps3.that came with it.

The problem is not so much the brand of the drive but the thickness.
I think all 1TB and higher are to thick and most 750GB as well.

You could mod the ps3 to hold it or put it in without the caddy. If it was me I would probably go without the caddy if I went either way. If I did do that I would cut me a piece of flexable something, and wrap it in the antistatic bag the drive comes in, and stick it behind the drive in the ps3 to hold it in place.

As whompus has said, if you want a neat system then a 750GB hdd is the largest drive you can get into a ps3 without filing some of the plastic around the drive area.

You want drives that are 9.5mm in thickness/height, the 12mm ones will not fit.

If you dont mind having wires sticking out you can get a sata cable and have one end connected to the ps3 ad the other coming out and attached to an external drive.
Use a esata port you normally use on a pc
Just remember the ps3 will only power a 2.5" drive if you try the messy wire bit with a 3.5" drive it will need a separate power supply.

also make sure to get a drive that has the same characteristics as the one in there..a.k.a...same rpm..no one likes a hot hdd
