DHL Express Ireland Welcomes Introduction of Postcodes
DHL Express, the world's leading international express delivery company, has today welcomed the decision by the Minister for Communications Eamon Ryan TD, to introduce a national postal code system from 2011. DHL Express Ireland said the new postcode system would give rise to efficiencies for businesses and public services across the economy. In addition the postcode would facilitate improved transportation, sortation and delivery for all parcels and packages throughout the country.
According to DHL Express Ireland, a postcode system would have a number of advantages for businesses and consumers over the current system.
Currently over 40 percent of buildings in Ireland have non-unique addresses and this can cause practical challenges when it comes to collection or delivery. However it's not just about collection and delivery as it has been clearly demonstrated that benefits will be generated across a wide variety of areas, including the utility providers, the emergency services, research agencies, the direct marketing industry etc.
Another important benefit of the postcode system would be to facilitate e-commerce. Many e-commerce operators require a postcode to be provided before a transaction can be completed. Without a postcode, Irish consumers can often find that they cannot make the purchases they want on-line.
"It is over four years now since it was first announced that a postcode system would be developed for Ireland and I welcome Minister Ryan's renewed commitment to press ahead with this important infrastructural project" said Bernard McCarthy, Managing Director of DHL Express Ireland. "Ireland is one of the few developed countries without a postcode system and this has put us at a disadvantage to our EU partners when it comes to moving goods throughout the country in an efficient manner. The postcode system will make it easier to identify individual addresses for companies such as DHL and will facilitate faster and more accurate deliveries. I am confident that in time the postcode will become an important feature of our economic infrastructure and ultimately it will support the development of Ireland's competitiveness."
