Today a judge dismissed the famous "OtherOS" suit against Sony on the grounds that corporations are allowed to remove any features from products sold without cause. He likened the removal to a Toyota that came with the ability to run on certain roads and courses having said ability removed. Thus, not only has Sony gotten away with disabling support for new games, new movies, and even old games with new patches, but car companies now have a huge new capability.
By this ruling, Toyota (and other car companies) can now legally remotely remove the capability of a car to drive on new roads, to drive to certain destinations on old roads, and even to drive on old roads that have had recent repairs! This might seem insane, but given low sales of new cars and high sales of old cars, it wouldn't actually be too surprising to see auto companies building such features into cars in order to make used vehicles less appealing due to their inability to use most roads. And if they did this, they would get away with it because the ruling is already in their favor.
if i brought a car with factory fitted gps or sat nav or any other feature and the feature got removed remotely i'd be replacing it with an aftermarket product and be suing the dealer for the costs.
