The NYTimes is reporting today that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer will unveil a Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard built tablet tonight during his CES 2010 keynote speech, stealing some thunder from Apple's still unofficial "iSlate."
Both HP and MSFT declined comment on the report or the product, but sources say the device will be "touted as a multimedia whiz with e-reader and multi-touch functions."

So what are our other choices in this market.. crApples overpriced yet to be released something or other.. no doubt loaded with drm .. A kindle? .. does that fit the same box? .. where amazon will steal what you have paid for.. or this M$ thing.. probably running that hopeless winCE junk and full of drm.
I'm puzzled by who actually wants or buys these things... when you can get a perfectly capable netbook for £79.

I agree, who is buying all this junk. I know I'm a little old school, but doesn't anyone else think our lives are getting a little TOO tethered to the media and internet? We can't even wait till we get home anymore to get on the internet, we have to be constantly connected?
I know there is a place for these in certain professions, but for the average joe its a waste. Just my opinion.
I am not sure, but I thought these devices were supposed allow subscriptions to newspapers and magazines along with book / video / audio media. So instead of paying 2.50 per sunday paper you can pay $50 and upload any newspaper for the year... stuff like that
For some reason anything Microsoft does isn't as groundbreaking and doesn't give you that goosebump feeling the way Apple does when they come out with something. Maybe it's because they're not thinking past the norm. They should think like Aliens.

No, it is just because Apple releases gobs of rumors and schedules press releases a year in advance...they build the anticipation to the point that a multimedia phone with no space for multimedia files is considered revolutionary...otherwise the fans would have to admit that it was just sad.

I realize that, and hear what you are saying, but I still think I can wait until I get home to read the newspaper. For the up front cost of one of these devices, I can pay for 20 years of a newspaper subscription, along with magazines, and movie rentals. I doubt the device would last half that long. I'm not even figuring in the 50 a year for any newspaper subscription you can read on the device or any other costs involved with owning one. But it is all designed so you can have your "media" wherever you go. And to some, maybe that's important. Granted, a newspaper or magazine doesn't look nearly as cool.
